Governor's Mansion started out as an early shipbuilder's residence in the mid 19th century and was later taken over and expanded by a successful lumber business family. Today, it is one of the last timber baron estates remaining.

Governor's Mansion at one time served as the official residence of the Lieutenant-Governor of the Province of New Brunswick. Mr. J. Leonard O'Brien donated Beaubears Island, now Boishebert and Beaubears Island Shipbuilding National Historic Sites, to the people of Canada. The island is situated in the Miramichi River just in front of Governor's Mansion.
